The Truth About the DJI Mini 5 Pro’s C0 Classification

13 October 2025

When DJI released the Mini 5 Pro, one of the biggest debates among drone enthusiasts was whether it truly qualified as a C0-class drone under the new European drone regulations. The confusion wasn’t entirely unjustified - after all, the certification system is still evolving - but the facts are now clear: the DJI Mini 5 Pro is officially a C0-class drone.

What Does “C0” Mean?

In simple terms, a C0 classification identifies drones weighing less than 250 grams that comply with all requirements outlined in the EU Regulation 2019/945. This allows the Mini 5 Pro to be flown in the Open A1 category, which is the least restrictive in Europe. That means you can operate the drone close to people (though not directly over them) without needing a full pilot license or formal training - one of the biggest perks for hobbyists and content creators alike. Drone Operator Registration and Flight Authorizations are still required in Malta due to Controlled Airspace.

How to Verify the Mini 5 Pro’s Certification

DJI didn’t just claim this classification; they provided verifiable proof. Each unit comes with a C0 label on the body, and owners can also download the official certificate of conformity directly from DJI’s website.
All you need is your drone’s serial number (found on the box or inside the battery compartment), and DJI will generate the documentation confirming that your model meets the required EN 4709-001 standard — the harmonized rule that governs drone certification in the EU.

Which Version of the Standard Applies?

Some users have been confused by references to different versions of the EN 4709-001 regulation. Here’s what you need to know:

  • The current version in effect (Version 4 – 2024) is the one used to certify the Mini 5 Pro.

  • A new Version 5 of the standard is in draft form and expected to take effect in April 2026, but that doesn’t affect the Mini 5 Pro’s certification.

  • The Mini 5 Pro, as it stands, fully complies with the present legal and technical framework for C0 classification.

Why the Confusion?

Part of the uncertainty stems from how complex the certification process is - even experienced pilots sometimes misinterpret the rules. Earlier drones under 250g were marketed as “C0-equivalent” before formal certification standards were implemented. But since January 2024, new drones entering the EU market must carry an official class marking, and DJI has followed this rule precisely.

C0 and Insurance Considerations

For those flying in Europe, particularly Malta, one practical aspect to check is your insurance coverage. Some policies previously referred only to “drones under 250g,” while updated ones also mention C0-class drones. If you hold a policy like Coverdrone, for instance, make sure it explicitly includes C0 drones - just to be safe.

In Summary

There’s no longer any doubt:
✅ The DJI Mini 5 Pro is a certified C0-class drone.
✅ It has an official certificate of conformity available from DJI.
✅ It complies with the EN 4709-001:2024 (Version 4) standard.
✅ It can be flown in the Open A1 category, offering maximum freedom with minimal bureaucracy.

So, if you’ve been hesitating to upgrade, rest assured - the Mini 5 Pro is not just a powerful little drone; it’s also fully compliant with the latest European regulations.
